Mantras & Meditation ~ Prayers & Meditation

One form of meditation is to sit quietly and repeat a mantra (or to use correct Indian grammar mantram). You can listen to the mantras listed by clicking on the links.

Another is to sit quietly and slowly repeat a prayer or an inspirational spiritual passage.

Mantras & Meditation

Om or Aum
Listen and feel the meaning

Om Namaha Shivai ~ Feminine form
Om Namaha Shivaiya ~ Masculine form
The name of God is Om Namaha Shivai in its feminine form and Om Namaha Shivaiya in its masculine form. It is a popular mantram in Southern India and is used as an invocation and prayer to the Hindu God Shiva. It is promoted by Leonard Orr and other rebirthers as being taught by Babaji, who died in 1984. Shri Haidakhan Babaji was said to be God in human form. He lived in Haidakhan, India.

Om Mani Padme Hum
A Buddhist mantra meaning the jewel in the lotus. A mantra for healing the heart.

Prayers & Meditation

Slowly repeating a prayer or an inspirational spiritual passage is a form of meditation.

Good Will (Sutta Nipata - the Buddha)
Grandma's Prayer (the Lord's Prayer)
Grandpa's Prayer
Mother Teresa's Prayer
The Prayer of Saint Frances
The Serenity Prayer
Surrender
The Ten Indian Commandments

Good Will (Sutta Nipata - the Buddha)
May all beings be filled with joy and peace.
May all beings everywhere,
The strong and the weak,
The great and the small,
The mean and the powerful,
The short and the long,
The subtle and the gross:

May all beings everywhere,
Seen and unseen,
Dwelling far off or nearby,
Being or waiting to become:
May all be filled with lasting joy.

Let no one deceive another.
Let no one anywhere despise another.
Let no one, out of anger or resentment,
Wish suffering on anyone at all.

Just as a mother with her own life
Protects her child, her only child, from harm,
So within yourself let grow
A boundless love for all creatures.

Let you love flow outward through the universe,
To its height, its depth, its broad extent,
A limitless love, without hatred or enmity.

Then, as you stand or walk,
Sit or lie down,
As long as you are awake,
Strive for this with a one-pointed mind;
Your life will bring heaven to earth.

Grandma's Prayer (the Lord's Prayer)
I put this prayer here in devotion to my much loved Grandmother Joyce Neaves. She was not a church goer, but obviously gained a great deal from this prayer. In one of our late night chats, when Grandma was aged 95, she told me that she said this prayer every night and that she felt she had forgiven everyone and held no grudges towards anyone. She also felt that no one was trespassing against her. She said it with a sparkle in her eye and one of her delightful smiles.

Our chat left it's message engraved on my heart. Grandma passed away a couple of months before her 96th birthday.

Our Father which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those that trespass against us>
And lead us not into temptation;
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
forever and ever.
Amen

Read the Lord's Prayer in 1221 languages and dialects It is facinating to see the changes that have been made to the prayer. See the many different versions of the prayer used over the centuries.

Grandpa's Prayer - for Grandpa Neaves

Rally rally round the table,
Fill your tummies while your able!

Mother Teresa's Prayer

People are often unreasonable, illogical and self-centered;
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies;
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you've got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God;
It was never between you and them anyway!

The Prayer of Saint Frances
Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury,pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
It is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen

The Prayer of Saint Frances can easily be made compatable with Buddhist philosophy. Long time meditator and Buddhist Rachel Barat recommends removing the God words to achieve this!

The Serenity Prayer
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

Probably written by Reinhold Niebuhr around 1932

SURRENDER
"I was sitting in my garden marvelling at the variety and intensity of scents and colours - a thousands and more brilliant young greens, cherry blossom and many other Spring flowers, blue sky and suddenly felt myself dissolve into and meld with everything around me. It was an unconcious but totally present act of surrender - mind, body, ego,past, present, future, everything. When I came indoors, I wrote this. Feel free to use it as you choose - as a meditation, prayer, acknowledgement of spiritual energy, or whatever. A.J."

SURRENDER
I am my skin in which I fit,
I am this seat on which I sit,
I am the sun warm on my face,
I am the stones that pave this place,
I am all trees that gives me shade,
I am all grasses, each single blade,
I am the fresh milk in my glass,
I am the cloud that makes to pass,
I am fur, feather, nail, beak and claw,
I am heart and soul and so much more,
I am earth, air, water, wind and fire,
I am the sum of sexual desire,
I am the planets, stars and moon,
I am the eternal galactic tune,
I am everything yet nothing at all,
I am a dancer at the universal ball,
I am here, gone, yet here again,
I am wild and free, all-knowing and tame,
I am at peace in a state of elation,
I am at one with the act of creation.

Show great repect for your fellow beings
Give assistance and kindness wherever needed
Be truthful and honest at all times
Do what you know to be right
Look after the well being of mind and body
Treat the Earth and all that dwell thereon with respect
Take full responsibility for your actions
Dedicate a share of your efforts to the greater good
Work together for the benefit of all Mankind

Poetry by Frans Tomeij www.neurocare.nl

living in the now
in the silence
between your thoughts
you will meet
god’s thoughts
your intuition,
the rest are details

Near dead experience
I touched the universe
I was in the fifth dimension
in the implicate order
I felt unconditional love
light, lightspeed
and infinity
while meditating
I felt, saw and heard
in the silence
between my thoughts
that same fifth dimension
of unconditional love
and infinity
I experienced
that life and dead
exists in the duality
of the fourth dimension
the dimension of space and time
and that the spirit
of unconditional love
light lightspeed
and infinity
exists in the fifth dimension
of the implicate order
of the universe

from love
illusion, mirror
and image
simple, perfect
paradox
you’re your own mirror
with the factor of lightspeed
a projected mirror-image
that’s what you are
dualistic and
paradox yourself
you’re energy-light-breaking
light,
source of energy and matter,
holographic part of the whole
you’re self-made illusion
perfect
you’re from love.

think about it
reality and dream,
the same illusion.
make your dream reality
mirroring the illusion

just do it
live your own fantasy
like a child
living in the now
live your creativity
follow your heart
and it will be your world.
