Sri Easwaran |
My
beloved meditation teacher, Sri Eknath Easwaran, who grew up
in Gandhi's India and was profoundly influenced by him, founded
the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation in Northern California,
which is my second home. Sri Easwaran offers us a type of meditation
which is frequently called passage meditation.
One memorizes
an inspiring passage, and then meditates on the words without
thinking about the meaning. The idea is that we become what we
meditate on, and meditating in this way thrusts the words deep
into our consciousness where they can begin to effect our actions
and thoughts throughout the day.
|
Thirty
minutes of meditation early in the morning is recommended as a
start. I have found this type of meditation helpful because I do not
have to empty (or try to empty) my mind. I simply concentrate on the
words of the passage. Of course, many distractions come, but I try to
let them go, and to concentrate even more on the passage. Sri Easwaran
recommends that we do not fight the distractions, as that gives more
attention to them. It is difficult, but so rewarding. It has changed
my life.
Sri Easwaran has written many books, one of which, Take Your Time, has
been translated into Japanese. (There are translations of many of his
books in various languages.) A basic book to use as a start is called
Meditation, and a lovely book filled with meditation passages from
religious traditions around the world is called God Makes the Rivers
to
Flow.

Mountain Center of Meditation's website, at www.nilgiri.org.
There is a satsang or spiritual fellowship held at Maryknoll
in Tokyo. The satsang meets regularly on the fourth Thursday of every
month from 7-8:30 PM. Click
here for directions, maps and a virtual
tour.
Occasionally the date is moved from the fourth Thursday so it is best
to check with Susan beforehand if it is your first time or if you are
unsure of the schedule. An email reminder is sent out so please contact
Susan to get on the mailing list.
In addition, the satsang meets at The Unicorn Center in Ogikubo from
time to time. No dates are set at this time, but directions can be
found here: www.unicorncenter.com/contact.html
